What is Singing in the Round?

Singing in the Round is the name for five flourishing community choirs in Bath, Bradford on Avon and Trowbridge. They were started 11 years ago by Candy Verney who continues to direct, in collaboration with Jane Harris and Eileen Barron.

We sing a wide variety of songs: world music, British folk, rounds, gospel and jazz, and songs by contemporary songwriters. We experiment with ways of singing, including improvisation. We learn by ear and many of us had never sung before joining.

One of the special things about Singing in the Round is that, although we're a diverse bunch, it feels almost like a family. We enjoy regular seasonal gatherings in special places: at Christmas we sing in ancient churches; at Easter we sing and picnic, complete with hot cross buns and egg rolling. In the summer it's often singing around a large bonfire in Candy's garden or at a ceilidh.

We always welcome new singers - whether you have experience but want to try a different way of singing, or feel like a beginner.

Some comments from participants:

“This isn’t a choir - this is heaven!”

“Each session is an oasis of refreshment and renewal for me.”

“The group has a wonderful energy and spirit - it feels like my family.”

“One of the best things that's happened to me in years.”
